The award-winning flavors of our wines start with our high quality grapes. Set atop the rolling hills of Minnesota’s Sogn Valley, our sunny 20-acre vineyard is home to more than 9,000 vines in a wide range of Minnesota varieties. By growing our own grapes, we ensure that our produce is of the highest quality, and in turn, our wines are beyond delicious.
Cannon River Winery owners John and Maureen Maloney selected the vineyard’s location for its high elevation, excellent drainage and ideal soils. With a degree in horticulture, John knew that Sogn Valley would provide the perfect growing conditions for our grapes. And it’s no coincidence that our vineyard is on the same latitude as some of the best grape-growing regions in France and Italy.
More than ten years ago, we began planting our cold-hardy grapes, which include Marquette, Foch, Frontenac, LaCrescent, St. Pepin and many more. These cold hearty vines can withstand the coldest Minnesota winters and show even more character as a result.
In early autumn, we invite our Minnesota neighbors to participate in the age-old tradition of harvesting our grapes by hand. This rare, time-consuming process preserves the integrity of the fruit and ensures that the purest product goes into the barrel. It’s a labor of love that connects us back to the earth and allows our neighbors to be part of the harvest.
Fresh off the vine, our experienced winemaker works meticulously to crush and de-stem the grapes before placing them in the in the tank where they blossom into our stunning selection of wines.
